How to read the plate
An Ecuadorian plate (since 2012) has three letters, a dash and four digits: PBB-3239, on a silver-grey plate with ECUADOR on top. The first letter is the province of registration: P for Pichincha, G for Guayas, A for Azuay and so on. The second letter shows the type of owner: A, U and Z commercial, E government, X official, M local authorities, the rest private. Private plates have no colour band, commercial ones have an orange band and government ones a gold band. For seven provinces the plate letter differs from the ISO code — Cañar is U and Sucumbíos K, for instance.

History
Before 2012 plates used the ABC-123 format with the same province letter in front. Santa Elena (Y) and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (J) got their letters after the two provinces were created in 2007. Since June 2012 the ANT agency has issued plates in the current ABC-1234 format.
