How to read the plate
A Moroccan plate is split by two vertical bars: the serial number (up to five digits) on the left, an Arabic series letter (أ, ب, د, ه, و, ط…) in the middle and the prefecture or province code from 1 to 89 on the right. In 62407 | أ | 34, code 34 is Inezgane-Aït Melloul. Big cities have several codes: Casablanca has nine (6–13 and 72), Marrakech three. Codes 63, 68–71 and 89 are issued by provinces in Western Sahara, a territory whose status is disputed.

History
The current system dates from 2000; codes follow the prefectures and provinces of that time, so one prefecture can have several codes. Codes 72–89 were added as new provinces were created, from 2009. On the 1983–2000 plates the region was a single digit 1–9 at the end.
