How to read the plate
A Maldivian plate carries no region, even though the country has more than 1,200 islands. It has white characters on black on two lines: the top gives the vehicle category (A0/A1 motorcycles, B0/B1/B2 cars, C0/C1/C2 goods vehicles) and series, the bottom a use letter and four digits. The use letters are P private, C commercial, G government, S police, T taxi and D diplomatic. Atoll letter codes are not used on plates.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
Until 1984 a plate had at most four digits; the design changed in 1984 and letters were added in 1998. The current pattern has been issued since 2003. Maldivian plates have never had regional codes.
