How to read the plate
A Hong Kong plate has two series letters and 1–4 digits without a leading zero (KT 8264); I, O and Q are not used. There is no region on the plate: series are issued in order for the whole territory. The plates follow the British pattern with the Charles Wright typeface; the front plate is white, the rear one yellow. Personalised plates also exist.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
Until 1959 plates carried no letters, just a number from 1 to 9999. Two-letter prefixes appeared in 1949; the HK prefix then stood for Hong Kong itself, not a district. To drive into Guangdong, cars get a second, mainland plate 粤Z·…港.
