How to read the plate
In Australia every state and territory issues its own plates, so the region is read from the caption at the bottom — the name or slogan (NEW SOUTH WALES, QUEENSLAND – SUNSHINE STATE) — and from the colours and serial format. New South Wales uses black on yellow (AB·12·CD), Queensland maroon on white (123·AB4). Plates from the Australian Capital Territory always start with Y, those from South Australia with S. There is no separate region code in the serial itself.

The common 372 × 134 mm size dates back to the 1950s. Under the 1952 federal scheme each state got a block of first letters: New South Wales A–F, Victoria G–M, Queensland N–Q, South Australia R–T, Western Australia U–V, Tasmania W and the capital territory Y; parts of it survived into the 1970s–2000s. The states introduced their current formats at different times — Victoria in 2013, Queensland in 2020.
