How to read the plate
In the Federated States of Micronesia each of the four states issues its own plates, each with its own design, name and motto. Yap plates have up to four digits in black on white with ISLAND OF STONE MONEY and YAP STATE; Pohnpei plates have type letters and digits in white on green (PV 1495) with STATE OF POHNPEI. The state is identified by the caption, not by the digits.

Until 1986 the islands belonged to the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The current Yap series has been issued since 2000; there are no dates for the other states' series.
