As of January 1, 2026, a regulation mandating the use of V-16 warning beacons during roadside stops has come into effect in Spain. An independent study identified the Help Flash IoT+ model as having the highest effective luminous intensity, exceeding 290 candelas, which is 625% above the legal minimum of 40 candelas. This enhanced visibility is deemed particularly crucial for large vehicles like caravans and camper vans.

Will motorhomes soon require a tachograph?

The European Commission has clarified that EU member states can exempt privately used motorhomes and motorhome-trailer combinations over 7.5 tonnes from mandatory tachograph rules. This follows a proposal that would have affected vehicles towing a trailer or with a special loading device, impacting approximately 4,700 vehicles in Germany. The decision aims to reduce costs and legal uncertainty for private users, with industry associations calling for swift national implementation.

Spain tightens MOT rules for older campervans

Spain's DGT has issued a new instruction clarifying MOT (ITV) intervals for motorhomes and campervans. Motorhomes over 4 years old require inspection every two years, those over 10 years annually. Campervans up to 10 years old need annual checks, while those over 10 years must pass every six months. The update follows a Supreme Court ruling from March 13, 2018, which also allows municipalities to restrict parking times and prohibit overnight stays on urban roads.

Motorhome ITV in 2026: what changed and how to avoid fines

Spain has published updated guidelines for motorhome technical inspections (ITV). Inspection frequency depends on weight: motorhomes up to 3,500 kg require inspection every 2 years (from 4 to 10 years old) and annually after 10 years; heavier models are inspected more often. Costs range from €45 to €90 depending on region and fuel type. Special attention is paid to the legality of conversions: solar panels, bike racks, awnings, and additional equipment must be registered in the vehicle's technical documentation.
