How to read the plate
Malian plates issued before 2024 show two letters, four digits and two more letters starting with M (AB 1234 MD); the last pair apparently stands for the region, but no full list exists. The new series under order 2023-5150 is AA 001 AA: series, three digits and another series. Its region sits in a separate field on the right: a three-letter code (BKO for Bamako, KAY for Kayes, SKO for Sikasso) and a district number — A1–A7 for the communes of Bamako, C01–C20 for the cercles of the other regions.

History
Earlier still, the region was a digit 1–7 at the start of the number; sources do not say when that system was in use. Then came the AB 1234 MD plates. The current series was introduced by order no. 2023-5150 of 29 December 2023, published in April 2024; it already includes codes for the regions created in 2023 (Nioro, Kita, Dioïla, Nara, Bougouni, Koutiala, San, Douentza, Bandiagara).
