How to read the plate
A Mauritanian plate is written as one run: four digits, two Latin series letters and a two-digit wilaya code — 1234AK00. The code comes at the very end: 00 is Nouakchott, 01–12 are the other wilayas in the same order as ISO 3166-2. Characters and border are blue; a blue band on the right carries the outline of the country, the Arabic letters ج ا م (Islamic Republic of Mauritania) and RIM. Since 2017 an Arabic version is also allowed, with Arabic letters and the characters in mirrored order.

Older plates follow the same pattern — four digits, two letters and the wilaya code — but without the blue band on the right. Earlier formats are not described in the sources. Nouakchott was split into three wilayas in 2014, but no separate plate codes for them have been found: the city is still coded 00.
