As hotel costs in Japan surge, travelers increasingly turn to night trains and camper rentals to combine transport and accommodation. According to Nippon TV, JR West's night train West Express Ginga covers Kyoto to Shingu in 12 hours for 8,670 yen. JR East is developing a new night service from Shinagawa to Aomori (12.5–15 hours), and JR Central will run a special night Shinkansen on the Tokyo–Shin-Osaka route. Average hotel rates for two in central Tokyo have risen 70% over seven years. A 24-hour camper rental for four people costs about 38,000 yen, making it a cost-effective option. One camper rental agency reported bookings 3.3 times higher than last year.
On July 26, 2026, Japanese YouTube channel 'Tatsuo & Umiko' posted a review of a WEINSBERG camper van built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The vehicle features a three-burner stove, separate shower, toilet, 142-litre refrigerator, and under-seat heating. The van is 7 metres long.
The Hokkaido Camping Car & Outdoor Show 2026 will take place on August 29–30, 2026 at Access Sapporo in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The event will display motorhomes from across Japan, along with outdoor and pet supplies. The Sapporo Dog Festival will run concurrently with free admission. Entry is free for middle school students and younger; advance tickets cost 800 yen, day tickets 1000 yen.
At the Tokyo Camping Car Show 2026, Nissan Peas Field Craft presented the Brillante camper conversion based on the Nissan Caravan Super Long. It features a 100V household air conditioner, Webasto heater, large roof vent, and a multi-purpose room with shower and optional portable toilet. The sleeping area measures 1500×1830 mm, formed by folding the sofa and opposite seat. Interior height is 2400 mm.
Japanese company Carstay expects total reservations for camper vans and overnight parking spots during the 2026 summer holidays (July 18 – August 31) to reach about 2,750, 2.2 times higher than the previous year. Gross merchandise value (GMV) is projected at 78 million yen and revenue at 30 million yen, both record highs. The increase is attributed to rising hotel prices and accommodation shortages near major events like music festivals and fireworks displays.
Toy Factory has introduced the Joya camper based on the Fiat Ducato (L2H2). The model debuted in 2025, seats five and sleeps five. A test drive was conducted at Sagamiko MORIMORI circuit.
