How to read the plate
A Vietnamese plate starts with a two-digit province code (11–99), followed by a series letter (sometimes with a digit), a dash and five digits with a dot (30F-256.58) or four digits. Large provinces have several codes: Hanoi 29–33 and 40, Ho Chi Minh City 41 and 50–59, plus 61 and 72 after the 2025 merger. Since August 2023 the number belongs to the owner and can move with them to another car, so the code shows the place of first registration. Code 80 is used by central government bodies.

History
Province codes have been used since 1984; the current format applies from 1 January 2025. On 1 July 2025 the 63 provinces were merged into 34, but the old codes were not cancelled: each new province received all the codes of the provinces it absorbed. The code of the province whose name survived is issued first, then the others in ascending order once it runs out.
