How to read the plate
A Tunisian plate has white characters on black: a series of up to three digits on the left, the word تونس («Tunisia») in Arabic script in the middle and a number of up to four digits on the right (165 تونس 8908). There is no region on the plate: the series runs nationwide and roughly shows the year of registration — series 248–257 were issued in 2025. Other marks can replace تونس: ن ت for duty-suspended imports, ع ع for dealer trials, د ن for motorcycles.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The «series — تونس — number» format has been in use since independence in 1956. Before that, plates looked like X TU Y, with TU standing for Tunisia; they carried no region either.
