How to read the plate
An Eritrean plate has two lines, black on white inside a black border. The top line holds the letters ER, a dash and a circled digit; the bottom line holds five digits (ER – ③ 01860). The meaning of the circled digit is not firmly established: some sources call it a district code, but by analogy with the Ethiopian system it is more likely a vehicle category. So the region cannot be read from the plate.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The current plates appeared after independence in 1993; the exact date is unknown. From 1952 to 1993 Eritrea used the Ethiopian system, and in the Italian colony (1913–1941) plates read ERITREA, later ER.
