🇲🇰 North Macedonia — OpenVan.camp
North Macedonia is neither an EU nor a Schengen member, so regular border checks apply. German citizens can enter visa-free for tourist stays of up to 90 days using a passport or identity card; a temporary identity card is not accepted. The travel document must be valid for at least six months on entry. For the vehicle, registration certificate Part I and a driving licence are required; an international driving licence is not necessary. An International Insurance Card covering North Macedonia (MK, MKD or NMK) is mandatory; without it, a local short-term liability insurance must be taken out at the border. Foreign travellers must register their stay: hotels and campsites normally do this within 12 hours, private hosts within 48 hours. Those staying wild must register themselves at the Interior Ministry within 48 hours of entry. Main transit roads are well developed, but many rural roads have deep ruts and potholes; at night, poorly lit vehicles and horse-drawn carts pose a risk.
TV host Iskra Kanuzrova said on Facebook that after driving 2,500 km through the Peloponnese without issues, she got stuck in traffic immediately after entering North Macedonia. She attributed the congestion to two accidents near Bitola, which led police to divert vehicles onto local roads. Kanuzrova has previously voiced criticism of conditions in the country after returning from Slovenia.
