How to read the plate
Pakistan has no single design: each province and territory has its own, and the region is written out as a word, often with an emblem. An Islamabad plate has ICT on top, two or three letters and up to four digits in the middle (AB-123) and ISLAMABAD below. Plates from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Azad Kashmir also name the issuing city at the bottom. The series letters do not encode the region (except on old Punjab plates).

In Punjab until August 2020 the first letter of the series stood for the city (L for Lahore, M for Multan, V for Vehari) and the plate showed the year of issue; a new system has applied since 2020. In 2024–2025 the provinces are moving to plates tied to the owner. No complete official list of the old city letters has been found.
