How to read the plate
A Cuban plate has a sector letter and six digits in two groups: P 025 245. The letter shows the owner, not the province: P for private cars, A for state vehicles, C, D and E for diplomats, K for foreigners, T for rentals, F for the armed forces (FAR), M for the interior ministry (MININT). A vertical band with CUBA runs down the left side — blue for organisations, white for private cars.

History
The current system has been in force since May 2013. In 2002–2013 plates looked like ABC 123: the first letter was the province (P Pinar del Río, H Havana, U Santiago de Cuba) and the second the owner type; such plates can still be seen. Before that, municipal plates in various colours were issued.
