How to read the plate
A Ghanaian plate reads as a two-letter region code, then four digits and, after a dash, the last two digits of the registration year — GR 1899-18. On the rear plate the code sits on the top line next to the flag and the letters GH; the front plate has everything on one line. The code is usually the region's first letter plus R (GR for Greater Accra, CR for Central), but busy regions have extra series: GE, GT, GW for Greater Accra, AK, AS, AW for Ashanti. From 2026 the DVLA is moving to a new scheme with the code of the district registration centre at the end and a letter series instead of the year (GR 222 AD, AD for Adenta).

History
The current scheme with the registration year has been in use since January 2009. Before that plates carried two- and three-letter region codes (AA, ACA, ARA, WRA, UWR), up to four digits and a year letter — such plates are still seen. From 1 January 2026 the DVLA announced a new scheme with the code of the district registration centre, but no full list of these codes is available yet.
