How to read the plate
An Omani plate is yellow and split into three panels: a number of one to five digits, one or two series letters (Arabic above Latin) and the word عُمان. On current plates the letters are a series, not a region. Only the old pre-2001 plates showed a region: there the letters stood for the district of registration, e.g. A for Muscat, B for Batinah, SH for Sharqiyah.

History
The current series has been issued since 2001. On old plates (up to five digits and one to three letters) the letters showed the district: A Muscat, MCT Muscat capital town, B Batinah, DH Dhahirah, J Junubiyah, M Musandam, SH Sharqiyah. In 2011 Batinah and Sharqiyah were split into northern and southern governorates.
