How to read the plate
A Yemeni plate is blue with a thick black border. Across the top are اليمن (Yemen) and the vehicle type, خصوصي (private). Below, a small box on the left holds the governorate code from 1 to 22, and the number of up to five digits is on the right; both are written twice, Eastern Arabic digits above Western ones. For example, 1 is Sanaa city, 2 Sanaa Governorate, 3 Aden.

History
Governorate codes have been used on plates since 1993; the current design version dates from 2018. During the war, separate plates appeared in the south and east: in Aden with a lighthouse and the word عدن, in Hadhramaut with حضرموت and the letter H, in Al Mahrah with المهرة and the letter M; these show the region as a word.
