Custom text: real plates never carry this combination.

How to read the plate
A Nigerian plate reads like this: the state name is written large at the top, with its slogan underneath (CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE for Lagos). The number itself is ABC-123DE: the first three letters are the code of the local government area (LGA) where the car was registered (APP is Apapa in Lagos), followed by three digits and two series letters. FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA runs along the bottom and the flag sits top left. The characters are blue on white.

History
The current series has been issued since 1992; the design was updated in 2011. Before 2011 the area code stood at the end of the number (123 ABC or AB 123 ABC). Before 1992 plates were black, following British and French patterns.
