We've collected the top motorhome, camper van, and vanlife news for April 6–12, 2026. This issue covers Spain tightening parking rules ahead of the summer season, the German electric camper van Ari 458 Pro claiming the title of the world's smallest, Japan Airlines JAL launching a motorhome rental service directly from Narita, and a traveller who died on Ireland's west coast when her caravan was blown off a cliff during a storm.
The week signalled a turning point in European regulation: the southern part of the continent — Spain, South Tyrol, Turkey — is tightening restrictions near coastlines and in tourist zones, while the industry is betting on compactness and electric platforms. For travellers, this means summer 2026 will require careful route planning, but the choice of new motorhomes has become broader and more accessible.
Spain (DGT): the road traffic authority introduced an expanded package of rules for motorhomes and camper vans. Among the new measures are road sign S-128 designating waste disposal points, different MOT schedules for categories M and N, and expanded powers for inspectors. A ban on parking within 100 metres of beaches has been in effect since early April.
South Tyrol (Italy): several municipalities have banned overnight stays in vehicles on public car parks, citing issues with litter and sanitation. Camper associations are challenging the bans in court, calling them discriminatory.
Didim (Turkey): city authorities have begun issuing notices about a ban on camping along the coast, in parks, and in forest areas, which came into force on 1 April 2026. Violators face fines.
Netherlands: a consumer organisation has filed a lawsuit against Stellantis over the possible presence in thousands of motorhomes based on the Fiat Ducatoⓘ (2009–2019) of software that understated emissions figures. The claim could affect several thousand owners across Europe.
Germany (Ari Motors): the company unveiled the Ari 458 Pro electric camper van, measuring 3.82 metres in length, with a top speed of 70 km/h and a range of up to 230 km. Starting price from €30,381, though the base version ships without furniture. Motorway use is prohibited.
Japan (JAL): Japan Airlines launched the JAPAN RV TRAVELLER motorhome rental service from Narita Airport. Vehicles are equipped for remote work, and miles are earned with each rental. The service targets international tourists.
Korea / Netherlands (Kia PV5): VanLab unveiled a modular camper van conversion kit for the Kia PV5 electric van, installable in five minutes without tools. The kit includes a kitchen, bed, and storage systems, and requires no permanent modification of the vehicle.
USA (Honda): the company confirmed development of the Base Station caravan, despite the cancellation of the electric vehicles it was originally designed for. The prototype weighs 1,360 kg, stands 2.1 m tall when folded, features a pop-up roof, and is designed to be towed by any suitable vehicle.
France (Renault, Dacia): the brands presented updated models at Vanlife Expo in Rennes — the new Trafic Escapade from Renault and the Sleep pack for the Duster and Bigster from Dacia. This is the third consecutive year both brands have participated in the show.
Japan (Shiga): in the city of Higashiomi, the USE No-togawa RV park opened with 14 pitches and a full range of amenities — a wastewater dump station, round-the-clock toilets, and electricity for extended stays.
Japan (Aichi): in the city of Minamichita, the Camp in Airstream South 77 campsite opened — overnight stays based on vintage Airstreamⓘ trailers, from ¥5,000 per night, with electricity and full service available.
Australia (Albany): dozens of long-term residents were evicted from the Acclaim Rose Gardens caravan park following a change of ownership. The new owner, RAC Tourism Assets, intends to redevelop the site as a tourist campsite.
Video games: developers released a demo of Outbound for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — a game about motorhome life featuring world exploration, a co-op mode for up to four players, and customisation. The full version releases on 23 April 2026.
Ireland (Galway): a Swiss traveller died when her caravan was blown off a cliff by Storm Ali. Gusts reached 140 km/h; another person also died in the same storm in Northern Ireland.
Europe: Spain is the most active in regulating vanlife ahead of the season — the new DGT rules cover MOT requirements, beach parking, and waste disposal infrastructure. Italy (South Tyrol) bans overnight stays in car parks, while the Netherlands awaits the outcome of the lawsuit against Stellantis over Ducato emissions. Asia: Japan is developing vanlife infrastructure on several fronts — JAL launched motorhome rentals from Narita, and new RV parks have opened in Shiga and Aichi. Globally: camper van electrification is accelerating — Ari 458 Pro, Kia PV5, and Honda Base Station are all betting on compactness and modularity.
