How to read the plate
A Macau plate has white characters on black: two letters and two pairs of digits separated by dashes (MA-12-34). The letter M historically stands for Macau itself and the second letter is the series; the plate shows no region within Macau. Special prefixes: ZA for the garrison, HK for Hong Kong cars under a quota, CM for mopeds. Besides the long European plate there is also a square one.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
In the 1950s plates looked like M-123, from the 1960s to the 1980s M-12-34, and then today's MA-00-01 format appeared. Since 2008 plates are issued by the transport bureau DSAT. To drive into Guangdong, cars get an additional plate 粤Z·…澳.
