Gorynych Trip 2027

Start date
2-5 January 2027
Location
Route Tver → Torzhok → Veliky Novgorod, Tver

A New Year fairy tale on wheels

Winter can be truly magical — especially when you drive through old Russian towns, your motorhome is warm and smells of tea, and the silhouettes of ancient churches drift past the window. Gorynych Trip is a small motorhome caravan through the Upper Volga and the Novgorod lands, where history doesn't hide in museums but lives right on the streets: in the bends of rivers, the carved window frames and the quiet of snowy squares.

The route

Tver → Torzhok → Veliky Novgorod — about 400 km over four days, with short daily drives.

  • Tver — a city on three rivers: the Volga, the Tvertsa and the Tmaka. Here you can feel history breathing.
  • Torzhok — old streets and views over the river, like leafing through an old book.
  • Veliky Novgorod — the starting point: this is where Rus began, and from here you see everything differently.

Day by day

2 January — Tver. We meet in Tver and set off with an excellent guide: city secrets and legends, heroic pages of history, remarkable people whose lives were bound up with the capital of the Upper Volga — old palaces, elegant bridges, atmospheric embankments and curious artefacts of the Soviet era. Lunch, a free walk at your own pace, then the drive to Torzhok. We set up camp, and the cosiest part begins: board games right in the vans, unhurried talk and road stories.

3 January — Torzhok. The whole day belongs to its quiet streets and old silhouettes: the grand ensemble of the Borisoglebsky Monastery, the light wooden Tikhvin Church, the Tvertsa embankment. The past comes alive not through dry dates but through stories of the town's residents and guests. After lunch and a free stroll we drive on to Veliky Novgorod and park for the night close to the Kremlin — a step away from history. The evening, as always on our trips, is for games and good conversation.

4 January — Veliky Novgorod. An unhurried walk through old Novgorod, including corners that rarely make it into guidebooks: the Kremlin, how the city and the daily life of its people changed over the centuries, unexpected pages of history — with a guide who knows almost everything about Novgorod. In the evening we gather together to "close" the first journey of 2027: share impressions, talk about what we remember most and maybe sketch plans for the new year. Where exactly — let it stay a small surprise.

5 January — the morning of goodbyes. A little sad but very warm: some head home, some to St Petersburg or Moscow, and some may drop by Valdai or even drive on to neighbouring Belarus.
