An economy is emerging around van life in Corsica, encompassing not only vehicle sales and rentals but also a range of related services. Entrepreneurs like Camille Istria with I Picculi Combi rent out restored Volkswagen Combis, promoting authentic tourism. Campsites report an increase in van visitors, who spend money at local restaurants and shops, boosting the economy of less frequented areas.
The van life phenomenon, boosted by the COVID-19 pandemic, has increased the number of camper travelers in Corsica. In some campsites, they now account for up to 75% of guests, replacing tents and motorhomes. However, freedom is limited by a ban on wild camping, and most travelers stay in campsites.
On the night of July 25, a series of thefts from campers and caravans occurred at the Montélimar Est rest area (A7). Thieves entered vehicles while owners slept, stealing laptops, phones and wallets. A criminal case has been opened; suspects are being sought.
A Swedish family with four children was forced to flee the Les Viviers campsite on the Cap Ferret peninsula in southwestern France due to spreading wildfires. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from the tourist area, and French authorities also ordered the evacuation of Bordeaux airport. The family cut short their holiday and drove back to Sweden.
The Galets campsite in Banassac (Lozère) hosted the second edition of Rétro Camping from 24 to 26 July 2026. About 20 vintage vehicles, including motorhomes and caravans, were exhibited by their owners. Highlights included a Mystery Machine van styled after Scooby-Doo and an Austin Mini Clubman with a trailer that converts into a tent. Vintage clothing stalls and a flea market were also set up.
The 4th Festi'Val de la Morteau will take place on 5–6 September 2026 in Morteau, Doubs department. The free weekend celebrates the smoked Morteau sausage with IGP status. Highlights include a food market, a sausage-eating contest, a parade by the Confrérie des Chevaliers du porte-cheville, and a demonstration of traditional smoking in a tuyé. Motorhome parking is available at private sites in nearby Villers-le-Lac (about 4 km away), offering spaces with grey and black water disposal.
