How to read the plate
The most common plate in Nepal is the old type: red, with white Devanagari characters on two lines. The top line has the zone letter, the lot number and the class letter (बा १२ च — Bagmati zone, lot 12, private car), the bottom line a number of up to four digits. The new embossed plates (issued since July 2020) show the province name in small Latin letters at the top, followed by a class letter, two series letters and four digits.

History
The old plates were issued by 14 zones, abolished in 2015, but their letters remain on millions of vehicles. Embossed Latin-script plates were approved in 2017 and, after a Supreme Court suspension, have been issued since July 2020; in the transition years provincial plates in Devanagari were issued as well. Since 2022 the government has been discussing a return of Devanagari to the embossed plates.
