Custom text: real plates never carry this combination.

How to read the plate
A Mongolian plate reads like this: a red Soyombo sign on the left, then four digits, the MNG oval and three Cyrillic letters (0878 УНК). The first two letters are the code of the aimag (province) or Ulaanbaatar, the third is the series; the Mongolian letters Ө and Ү also occur. The capital has several codes — УБ, УН, УА, УЕ and УК — and its outlying districts Baganuur and Nalaikh have their own (БР, НА). Japanese imports sometimes carry a square rear plate.

History
The «four digits and three letters» format was inherited from the Soviet standard GOST 3207-77. The Soyombo sign and the MNG oval were added in 2001; before that plates followed the Soviet pattern without them.
