How to read the plate
A Djiboutian plate consists of three digits (001–999), the letter D and two more digits counting the «thousands» (683 D 30). The same number is repeated in Arabic characters; the letter D appears as د or ج on different specimens. There is no region on the plate. Other letters in place of D show the category, not the place: B for government vehicles, C for company cars.
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
The numeric format with the letter D has been in use since the 1990s. According to available descriptions, in 2023 the characters became white on a black 520×110 mm plate, while earlier plates were black on white; no photo of the new design has been found yet, so the example follows a 1990s graphic.
