Vans in historic center: situation improves but violations persist. 'Digital system needed'

The municipality of Fossacesia has completed a 17-month administrative process to reopen a camper area on the southern seafront. The site was closed in November 2024 after being reclassified as a 'red zone' due to flood risk. Authorities secured a nine-year concession from the Province of Chieti and are preparing a tender for management. The new urban plan also includes additional camper parking areas.

In Treviso, starting May 2024, the 'Orizzonte Giovani' project will deploy two street workers in a camper with audio equipment to patrol the 'red zone' (train station, Via Fiumicelli, Piazza Borsa area and overpass) where baby gang incidents occurred. Budget €137,000 (€110,000 from state fund 'Province per i giovani'), duration until July 2027. Aim: prevent youth distress, school dropout, and deviant behaviour. Also includes removable sports structures. Partners: health authority, cooperatives, school, Veneto Lavoro, Coni Veneto.

In Syracuse, carabinieri from the Radiomobile section reported two 44-year-old men, already known to police, for stealing diesel fuel from two motorhomes belonging to the local health authority (ASP). The suspects forced open the vehicles and removed the fuel. The investigation enabled rapid identification and referral to the judicial authorities.

In the Ottavia district of Rome, two men barricaded a man inside a camper van, blocking the door and window, after he refused to work as an illegal ferryman for them. The victim, who worked as a driver for one of the suspects, was found by police in a state of severe distress. Initially reporting the van as stolen, both were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping; the arrest was confirmed by the court.

The mobile medicine project by ASL Biella and INMP concluded: in 117 operational days, the camper performed 4,596 interventions for 1,059 patients in remote areas of the province.

Dozens of foreign tourists have illegally set up camp with motorhomes and tents on a public parking lot in Piscinas, Costa Verde. This practice contravenes local regulations that prohibit wild camping, as indicated by posted signs. The incident has reignited debate about double standards in enforcing rules for foreigners versus local citizens.
