How to read the plate
A Venezuelan plate (since 2008–2009) has two letters, three digits and two letters in dark navy: AA128GG. REPUBLICA BOLIVARIANA DE VENEZUELA runs across the top, over a pale wave in the flag's colours with stars. The last letter is the state of registration, based on the owner's residence (A Capital District, G Carabobo, V Zulia), and the state's name is also printed at the bottom. The letters W (La Guaira) and X (Amazonas) differ from the ISO codes, Q is not used, and since 2021 plates carry a QR code.

In earlier series the state letter came first (e.g. FAH-467 from 1982, RAP 44W from 1995–1997). Until 2008 capital plates read “Distrito Federal”, then “Distrito Capital”. The letters W, X and Y were introduced in the 1990s for the former federal territories.
