How to read the plate
A Vatican plate has black characters on white and no side band. The prefix shows the owner, not a region: SCV (Status Civitatis Vaticanae) for state vehicles, CV (Città del Vaticano) for cars of residents and employees. The number follows the prefix (SCV 01177).
Region codes
Plates in this country do not show the region — you cannot tell it from the plate.
History
Vatican plates have never shown regions: the prefix has always indicated the owner category. Our sources have no detailed history of earlier formats.
