You need to arrange the visa in advance. Email an application form and a copy of your passport to the consular department of the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry. An entry permit arrives by return email within 7 working days. You enter with this permit and must collect the visa itself in person in Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia, within 3 working days of arrival. A tourist visa for up to 1 month costs 350 Russian roubles; for up to 6 months, it costs 700. Exception: members of an organised tour group may stay up to 24 hours without a visa.

Worth knowing about the route
- Georgia regards Abkhazia as its own territory. Under Georgian law, foreigners may enter it legally only from Georgia, from the town of Zugdidi via the Inguri crossing point (the Abkhaz side is open from 08:00 to 19:00). Georgian law treats entry from Russia through the Psou crossing, by sea or by air as a crime, punishable by a fine or up to 4 years in prison (Article 322¹ of the Criminal Code of Georgia). Neither Georgia nor Abkhazia officially says whether foreigners may cross at Inguri in their own car. Ask the consular department of the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry when you apply for your entry permit.
- Entering from Russia (Psou crossing). The Abkhaz Foreign Ministry requires you to register the car at the Psou crossing: temporary registration costs 250 Russian roubles per month. Abkhaz third-party motor insurance is compulsory and is sold at the crossing. Russian OSAGO insurance and the international Green Card are not valid in Abkhazia. The Psou crossing is temporarily closed when there is a threat of drone attacks.

Length-of-stay rules come from several sources. Some are verified by the OpenVan.camp Editorial team against official sources and show a verification date. The rest are extracted from open sources, most often Wikipedia, and are shown with a source link and the date they were retrieved. Vehicle import rules are shown only once verified. The underlying visa requirement matrix is the passport-index-data dataset (MIT licence), updated 17 February 2026.
