How to read the plate
On a Sri Lankan plate the two-letter province code sits in small type under the emblem on the left, apart from the number itself. Then come two or three series letters, a hyphen and four digits: WP CAB-1234. There are nine codes: WP Western, CP Central, SP Southern, NP Northern, EP Eastern, NW North Western, NC North Central, UP Uva and SG Sabaragamuwa.

The province code appeared on plates in 2000. Before that the series were numeric (e.g. 19-1234), and early series carried the Sinhala letter ශ්රී (“Sri”). Earlier still, from 1903, plates were issued in letter series by district.
