How to read the plate
A Lesotho plate has the district letter (sometimes two) and four digits in blue on white: C 5882, where C is Leribe. The letters match the ISO 3166-2 codes (A for Maseru … K for Thaba-Tseka). On the left is a mokorotlo hat between two validity years, with LESOTHO below. According to an amateur reference, the letters W, X, Y and Z go to government vehicles.

History
The current system dates from 1979. From 1966 to 1979 the number began with L and the district letter (LA for Maseru … LJ for Mokhotlong) and was white on black; before 1966, in Basutoland, it began with B and the district letter (BA … BJ). Thaba-Tseka district (K) was created in 1980 and is absent from the old series.
