How to read the plate
A Gambian plate starts with a letter code for the place of registration: BJL for Banjul, KM for Kanifing, and WCR, NBR, LRR, CRR and URR for the five regions. Then come up to four digits and a series letter: BJL 7309 C. The code shows where the vehicle was registered, not where the owner lives: most cars from the Kombo St Mary area carry BJL because they are registered at the port of Banjul. Private plates have white characters on black, with THE GAMBIA in small type below the number.

History
The current system dates from 1999; in 2019 the plates got a new design with a European-style typeface and the flag on the left. Before 1999 a number consisted of G, G1A, G2A or G3A and four digits, with no place of registration. After the divisions were renamed regions in 2007, the codes WD, NBD, LRD, CRD and URD gave way to WCR, NBR, LRR, CRR and URR.
