No freedom camp changes in report

Council staff are recommending no freedom camping bylaw changes to tackle issues at two contentious Wānaka hot spots. A staff report presented to Queenstown Lakes district councillors found that 25% of all freedom camping complaints during the first six weeks of the 2025 bylaw were related to the Allenby Pl carpark, while Beacon Point Rd generated the most service requests over the summer. The report concluded that issues were largely due to non-compliance rather than a need for bylaw amendments. Councillors will consider three options: additional targeted conditions, a prohibition, or maintaining the status quo.

New Zealand's self-contained vehicle certification system changes

From June 7, blue self-containment warrants for freedom camping will no longer be valid. Vehicle owners must switch to the new green warrant system by June 6. Camping on public land without a green warrant may result in a $400 infringement notice. The transition period, which began in December 2023, ends with over 68,000 vehicles already certified under the new system.

New Zealand's blue self-containment warrants expire on June 7

From Sunday 7 June 2026, blue self-containment warrants for motorhomes and campervans will no longer be valid for freedom camping in New Zealand. Vehicle owners found freedom camping on public land without a green warrant may face a NZD 400 infringement notice. The transition period, which began in December 2023, ends this weekend. Over 68,000 vehicles have already been certified under the new system. Requirements include fixed toilets, water supply, wastewater management, ventilation, and rubbish storage.

From a luxury 1926 caravan to toilet woes in New Zealand campsites

Over the past summer, the Beacon Point Rd restricted freedom camping area in Wānaka received 122 service requests, including reports of public defecation in nearby bushes. Queenstown's deputy mayor said councils cannot act on issues outside the designated zone due to a 2024 High Court ruling limiting jurisdiction. Community staff collected 1,620 litres of rubbish and encountered human faeces daily. Council plans to push for legislative changes and trial a boom gate with user-pays facilities at Luggate Red Bridge.

More than 1600 fines issued to freedom campers in Queenstown under new rules

The Queenstown Lakes District Council introduced new freedom camping rules in December, restricting vehicles to 141 designated sites. Over three months, 1514 Freedom Camping Act infringements at $400 and 108 Reserves Act infringements at $800 were issued, primarily for illegal parking or overstaying. The council reported the highest number of fines since around 2019, while campers argue that demand for spaces far exceeds supply.

South Island Freedom Camping Rules Tighten

District councils are tightening freedom camping rules for motorhomes and campervans due to increasing numbers and environmental concerns. As of December 2025, the Queenstown Lakes District restricts camping to certified self-contained vehicles at 141 marked car parks, with a maximum two-night stay. The Mackenzie District has fully enforced restrictions, and fines for illegal camping range from NZD 400 to 800.

New camping rules in New Plymouth and Bridlington Tourist Association gains new members

The New Plymouth District Council has revised its freedom camping regulations. Self-contained motorhomes and caravans can stay up to three nights at a single location within a 30-day period. Non-self-contained vehicles are limited to one night in designated areas like Lake Rotomanu. Tent camping on public land is now prohibited in the district.
