Caravan catches fire in Nógrád with person inside

As of January 1, 2026, Hungary has changed its road toll rules for motorhomes. Vehicles with a maximum authorized mass over 3500 kg have been moved from the truck category to the D2 category, eliminating the need for complex on-board units. They now only require an e-vignette, purchased online, similar to lighter motorhomes.

A motorhome was completely destroyed by fire in the yard of a family home in Mogyoród. The fire also threatened a nearby residential building, but professional firefighters from Gödöllő contained and extinguished the blaze.

A 79-year-old woman died in a caravan fire on Tuesday morning in Terbegec, Nagykürtös district. The caravan, parked on a residential property, was fully engulfed, and her body was found after the blaze was extinguished. From January 1, 2026, the toll payment system for motorhomes will change in Hungary. All motorhomes, regardless of weight, must purchase an electronic vignette (e-matrica) to use the toll road network. The toll category (D1 or D2) is determined by the maximum permissible mass and the number of passenger seats as stated in the vehicle's registration documents.
